Polish Letter A: How to Say A (always ‘ah’, never ‘ay’)
The Polish letter A is the 1st letter of the 32-letter Polish alphabet, named simply a and pronounced [a], like the ‘a’ in ‘father’ but shorter. It never turns into ‘ay’ or a weak ‘uh’. In a PWN count of about 25 million words, a was the most frequent letter, at 8.91% of all letters.
What the Polish letter A sounds like
The Polish letter A is an open vowel, [a], made with the mouth wide and the tongue low. Think of the ‘a’ in ‘father’ or ‘spa’, cut a little shorter. Polish vowels have no long and short pairs, so you never need to stretch it.
The big difference from English is consistency. English ‘a’ has at least five values (cat, cake, car, care, sofa). Polish A has one. It sounds the same in mama, in tak (yes) and at the end of Polska (Poland).
| Word | IPA | Meaning | Hear |
|---|---|---|---|
| mama | [ˈmama] | mom | |
| kawa | [ˈkava] | coffee | |
| tak | [tak] | yes | |
| Polska | [ˈpɔlska] | Poland | |
| dama | [ˈdama] | lady |
A never weakens in unstressed syllables
English speakers reduce unstressed vowels to a lazy ‘uh’ (the schwa). Say ‘banana’ and only the middle ‘a’ is a real ‘a’. Polish does not do this. Each A in banan (banana) and kanapa (sofa) keeps its full ‘ah’ value.
Stress falls on the second-to-last syllable in most Polish words, so kanapa is ka-NA-pa. The stressed syllable is louder, but the other two vowels stay clear. Read more about stress in the Polish alphabet pronunciation guide.
The Polish letter A in a/au/aj combinations
A is often followed by j or u, and here spelling helps you.
- aj sounds like ‘eye’: daj (give), tramwaj (tram).
- au in loanwords is one syllable, [aw], so auto (car) is ‘AW-to’.
- au across a word boundary inside native compounds stays two vowels: nauka (science) is na-U-ka.
The nauka case trips up learners because stress lands on the u. If you are unsure, check a dictionary such as the PWN dictionary at sjp.pwn.pl, which marks unusual stress.
A as a word: ‘and’ with a contrast
On its own, a is a common conjunction. It means ‘and’ or ‘while’ when two things are compared: Ja piję kawę, a ty? (I drink coffee, and you?). The plain ‘and’ is i, covered on the Polish letter I page.
A is also the most common ending of feminine nouns and names: Anna, Kasia, kobieta (woman). So when you see a Polish first name ending in -a, it is usually a woman’s name. Exceptions exist, such as the man’s name Kuba.
How common is the letter A in Polish?
A is the most frequent letter in Polish writing. A letter count published by the PWN language advice service found a at 8.91%, ahead of i (8.21%) and o (7.75%). That count treats ą as a separate letter, which makes up another 0.99%.
Its neighbour Ą with an ogonek looks like A but is a different letter with a nasal ‘o’-based sound. Do not drop the hook: są (they are) and sa are not the same thing.
A in place names and loanwords
Because A never changes, long Polish words with several a’s are easier than they look. Warszawa (Warsaw) has three identical ‘ah’ vowels: var-SHAH-va. Kraków is KRAH-koof, with stress on the first syllable because the word has only two.
| Word | IPA | Meaning | Hear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warszawa | [varˈʂava] | Warsaw | |
| Kraków | [ˈkrakuf] | Kraków | |
| sałata | [saˈwata] | lettuce |
Polish spells borrowed words by sound, so an English word whose ‘a’ is not an ‘ah’ may change letter. ‘Manager’ became menedżer, written the way it sounds to Polish ears. Where the source has a real ‘ah’, the a stays: banan, fan, tramwaj.
Common mistakes with A
- Saying ‘ay’ as in ‘cake’ when reading names like Kasia or Jan. It is always ‘ah’: KAH-sha, YAHN.
- Reducing unstressed A to ‘uh’ at the end of words. Polska ends in a clear ‘ah’.
- Reading Ą as plain A. The ogonek changes the vowel completely.
- Splitting au in loanwords like auto into two syllables, or merging it in nauka.
Next in the alphabet is Ą, then B. For all 32 letters on one page, see the Polish alphabet chart.
